Coffee scrub to reduce cellulite

The cost of beauty isn't always affordable for some women and most of them are always on the prowl to discover inexpensive ways to satisfy their beauty needs.

Most women will go to the full extent to enhance what their mamas gave them. One of the conditions affecting women that merit much attention is cellulite.

It is very rare that men ever get cellulite, but it is very common that women are more likely to get cellulite and it is very unbecoming for them - they don't like it!

It is important that you know what cellulite is, so it can be addressed properly. First and foremost, cellulite is not a disease. The scientific discussion about cellulite is a never-ending one, but one thing is certain, is that many women identify with this condition.

As a skincare professional, many women have asked me about remedies to counteract the condition. This article will present one realistic method of minimising its visibility.

 

WHAT IS CELLULITE?

 

Cellulite is a condition affecting the skin, in which the skin appears to have areas with underlying fat deposits. In some literature it is described as 'orange peel' or a'dimpling' appearance most noticeable on the thighs, buttocks and, to a lesser extent, the lower abdomen of some women, who are usually otherwise healthy. Cellulite is normal fat beneath the skin which often occurs in women after puberty.

 

WHY COFFEE SCRUB?

 

As Jamaicans we are a nation of coffee lovers, and arguably we have the best coffee in the world here in Jamaica. Many of us have explored all the wonderful things you can use the grounds for around the home. Coffee contains caffeine, which stimulates dilation when applied to the surface of the skin, while the scrubbing motion increases circulation. The intended effect is that it will plump the skin and make the appearance of cellulite less obvious. In addition, coffee grounds contain antioxidants, which increase collagen production in the skin.

 

HOW IT WORKS

 

We have grown accustomed to drinking our premium coffee and experienced its benefits. So, why not apply coffee grounds as a body scrub to our lower extremities to treat cellulite. It can be done at home, but it's best applied by a professional. The skin is the largest organ in our body and it absorbs 60 per cent to 80 per cent of what it comes in contact with. Be mindful, applying coffee scrub will not treat cellulite permanently.

- The caffeine and antioxidants in coffee are moderately effective to reduce the appearance of cellulite in the short term.

- Coffee is a stimulant, the caffeine in coffee dilates blood vessels, which temporarily tones and tightens tissue.

- The antioxidants in coffee may help to release toxins, which is not only helpful for cellulite, but for healthy skin in general. This property also promotes circulation and reduces water retention, both of which may also help smooth the rumpled look of cellulite.

 

What you should know

 

Having studied exercise physiology, I have come across studies which support the fact that females who exercise regularly generally have a lower per cent of body fat and have less cellulite.

Therefore, a caloric-restricted diet plan will help reduce underlying body fat. The effects of a coffee body scrub can last up to a week. The good news is, if you have plans to visit the beach or wear a short skirt in the near future, try getting a coffee scrub treatment at your favourite spa, or you can try it at home.

 

Method

 

Use fresh-ground coffee for best results, as it has more antioxidants and caffeine than used coffee grounds.

1. Mix quarter cup ground coffee with three tablespoons hot water and let the mixture sit for 10 minutes to absorb the water and form a paste.

2. Then, mix in two tablespoons of coconut oil to help bind the grinds. This will make it easier to apply, and give extra moisturising effects.

3. Cleanse problem areas with warm water, and then apply the scrub by massaging in a circular motion for two to four minutes with your hands.

4. Rinse with warm water to remove all grounds, then pat dry and moisturise, if desired.
