News report insensitive and inaccurate
THE EDITOR, Sir:
"The alleged victim, who is now 15 years old, gave birth to a boy in November last year.'' (Gleaner, Thursday, December 20, 2018)
In what context could anyone, including The Gleaner, correctly refer to a child who has given birth as an alleged victim? Alleged victim of what? Sexual abuse? Carnal abuse?
''Alleged victim", which was used twice in The Gleaner's report, is inaccurate and insensitive. The fact is, an accusation or allegation is a declaration that has not been proven.
She made an allegation against a pastor, and while the court is yet to decide on the guilt or innocence of the accused person, the fact of pregnancy and birth is more than sufficient proof that sexual abuse did occur. She was under the age of consent and, therefore, is not any alleged, but definitely a victim of carnal abuse, unless, by chance, The Gleaner is implying immaculate conception or technologically guided reproduction.
She remains a victim of carnal abuse, whether the accused is declared guilty or innocent by the court. The Gleaner should exercise prudence and more sensitivity when reporting on matters of this nature.
