Can Jamaica afford democratic socialism today?

THE EDITOR. Madam:
Many people talk about returning to a strong democratic socialist model to address poverty and the high cost of living. We all want better schools, free healthcare, and fair wages. However, we must look closely at our current financial limitations.
Jamaica has worked very hard to reduce its national debt over the last decade. Our economy is growing, but it remains fragile. Global shocks, such as pandemics and fuel-price spikes, can affect us quickly.
A heavily socialist programme requires large amounts of government funding. If we borrow more money or tax the small-business sector too heavily, we risk triggering another economic crisis. We could see higher inflation and fewer jobs.
Instead of increased state control, Jamaica should focus on smart, steady growth. We need better infrastructure, stronger public services, and targeted assistance for the poor. We cannot spend money we do not have. Let us build a stable economy first before attempting massive economic experiments.
