Artificial intelligence: Security’s new threat

THE EDITOR, Madam:
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become one of the most transformative technologies of this century, revolutionising industries across all sectors.
However, as AI capabilities continue to advance, security experts are concerned about the growing risks associated with its misuse. One of the most significant security concerns is the use of AI by cyber criminals. Sophisticated AI systems can automate cyberattacks, making them faster, more targeted, and harder to detect.
Threat actors can use AI-powered tools to identify vulnerabilities in computer networks, develop malicious software, and launch phishing campaigns that mimic legitimate communications. These attacks increase the likelihood of individuals and organisations falling victim to fraud and data breaches.
Deepfakes are another threat. Using AI technology, malicious actors can create realistic fake videos, images, and audio recordings. This fabricated information can be used to spread misinformation, manipulate public opinion, and damage reputations. Cyber experts warn that the increasing reality of deepfakes makes it difficult to distinguish between authentic and manipulated content.
AI can negatively impact global security. Autonomous weapons systems, powered by AI, have raised ethical and strategic concerns. Allowing machines to make decisions about the use of deadly force could increase the risk of unintended conflicts and reduce human accountability.
Privacy advocates have highlighted concerns about the use of AI in surveillance. Advanced facial-recognition systems and predictive analytics can monitor individuals on an unprecedented scale. While these technologies can enhance public safety and law-enforcement capabilities, they may infringe upon civil liberties and personal privacy if not properly regulated.
Policies, regulations, and ethical guidelines should be developed to ensure the responsible use of artificial intelligence. Collaboration between policymakers, cybersecurity professionals, researchers, and the private sector is essential to address the risks while preserving the benefits of innovation.
AI is here, and its impact on security will remain a critical issue. While technology offers enormous opportunities for economic growth and societal advancement, its potential misuse underscores the need for vigilance, robust safeguards, and responsible governance.
