Health minister Horace Dalley says it’s only a matter of time before the Zika Virus reaches Jamaica and he is warning Jamaicans to take the threat of the virus seriously.

In a Christmas message, the health minister said it was no longer a matter of if but when the virus, otherwise called ZIKV, will enter Jamaica.

He says preparation is vital.

Dalley is calling for all health workers to help to educate friends, families, acquaintances and even strangers about the zika virus and participate in the effort to rid their surroundings of mosquito breeding sites.

Several countries in the region, including Brazil, Chile, Colombia, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Venezuela have reported cases of ZIKV.

The ministry of health has already started training the first batch of community health workers who are to be used as part of the Government’s Zika Virus preparedness activities.

The ministry has been heightening its vector control activities and public education programme as it seeks to prepare the country for the possible introduction of the Zika Virus in Jamaica.
