50,000 mobile customers switch networks in six months
Technology Minister Phillip Paulwell is reporting that 50,000 mobile customers have switched telecommunication companies since number portability was introduced in June.
This is a significant jump from the approximately 15,000 recorded in August.
Number portability allows mobile phone users to switch networks without losing their telephone numbers.
Paulwell says the government is pleased with the success so far and hopes to see continued improvement.
He also says there have been improvements in service and prices in the telecoms market as a result of number portability.
The technology minister is optimistic that the increased competition will lead to further benefits to consumers.
Meanwhile, the Paulwell says the government is pressing ahead with the next step of allowing Jamaicans to switch landline service.
