Madness!!

That's how veteran trade unionist and former People's National Party Senator Navel Clarke has described the government's tax plan.

Clarke says the plan is depressing, suppressive and repressive and will create even more havoc on the economy than the the programme with the International Monetary Fund in the 1980’s.

According to Clarke, if persons started demonstrating against the measures he would join them.

The trade unionist says pensioners, and persons who are already not paying PAYE will be hit hard by the measures.

Yesterday, Director of the Taxation Policy Division in the ministry, Shauna Trowers said the tax measure will actually benefit pensioners earning up to $1,000,272, who come July 1 will not pay any income taxes.

However, Clarke is questioning how many pensioners actually have annual incomes that high.

He says with the multiplier effect of the new tax on gas, pensioners will face hikes in their transportation, electricity and food bills.
