Erroneous statement from Rita Marley
The Editor, Sir:
I have just had the privilege of watching the TV production of the documentary on the life of Bob Marley entitled, Behind the Music. It is an excellent documentary and brings out very clearly the deep conviction of Bob Marley that behind his music was a message of peace, love and unity. This, at a time when Jamaica was on the brink of a civil war!
However, it was a pity that included in the documentary was a very questionable statement. It was stated by Rita Marley that she saw the hand of Haile Selassie when he visited Jamaica, and in his hand were nail prints. This was a clear attempt to identify Haile Selassie with Jesus Christ, that is, God, a Rastafarian belief.
But, what was not said in the documentary was that during that same visit, Haile Selassie, at the public ceremony to honour him, explicitly declared that he was a worshipper of God. Now, it is a fact that the Emperor Haile Selassie was a Christian, indeed, he was the head of one of the oldest Christian churches, the Ethiopian Orthodox Church.
On his visit, Haile Selassie made it so clear that he was not God, that many followers of the Rastafarian religion declared that it was the wrong Haile Selassie who was brought to Jamaica. In the interest of accuracy, it would have been good to have mentioned this in the documentary.
Besides this, it is an excellent documentary.
