YMCA camps focus on youth, counsellors
Summer camps usually foster values within children who attend. However, this year's YMCA summer camp is aiming to do that as well as encourage camp counsellors' growth and development. The 10-week camp will begin on July 5 and end on August 27 at 21 Hope Road in Kingston.
"Over the last 10 weeks, 130 young people aged 13-26 have been training in resource use and initiative, as well as first aid and arts and crafts," said Sarah Newland-Martin, general secretary at the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA).
Newland-Martin, who has been with the YMCA for 24 years, said that seeing development in not only those who attend camp but in camp leaders as well is what keeps her going.
Agents of change
"Youngsters can develop skills they may never have," she said. "We always ask (counsellors) that they became agents of change."
The summer camp targets children five to 14 years old and offers a range of activities, including swimming, dance and computer classes; indoor and outdoor games; and field trips.
The YMCA general secretary also spoke of special theme days, such as a special time to 'hug somebody'.
"It's fun and it's an opportunity to be relaxed and expressive in every way possible."
The National Youth Service, GraceKennedy, the Office of the Prime Minister, Petroleum Corporation of Jamaica and Bethel Baptist Church will provide the YMCA with young leaders to assist with the camp.
Newland-Martin said there have been a lot of enquiries and the YMCA is expecting at least 150 children to enroll.
The cost to register is $3,500 per week or for those who are interested in paying monthly, $2,500 per week. Package rates are available.
Early registration is taking place throughout June. As of July 1, a late registration fee of $200 will apply.
