WESTERN BUREAU: The beach party to officially launch Reggae Sumfest 2010 has been changed from the traditional Sunday afternoon to Saturday, July 17, at Cornwall Beach.

Summerfest Production's Robert Russell announced the date change during the western Jamaica Reggae Sumfest launch party last Thursday night at Pier One in Montego Bay.

"The venue was not available for Sunday and we didn't want to move the event elsewhere, because Cornwall Beach is one of the finest beaches in the world. It adjoins the world famous Doctor's Cave Beach," explained Russell.

All-day party

The all-day beach party, Russell said, commences at 10 a.m., offering patrons the choice of swimming and playing volleyball, while listening to the sounds of ZJ Bambino and MoBay's own DJ Baby Thug. The party gets hot after dark with Digicel Rising Star sensation Brown Sugar and performances by Magnum Kings and Queens' Press Fyah and Bumpa. Comedic duo will lead way to the stellar performance of Errol Lee and the Bare Essentials.

As a special feature, the finalists of the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) festival song competition will also be on the stage.

The high-energy day will have Red Stripe drink specials all day and many prizes and giveaways.

Come Thursday, July 22, the event moves to the main stage at Catherine Hall for 'Dancehall Night' with the likes of 'The Teacher' Vybz Kartel, 'Gully Gad' Mavado, Bounti Killer, Elephant Man, Assassin and Voicemail. Their female counterparts, D'Angel and Cecile, will carry the flag for the women.

"We are dedicating the night in memory of Oneil," said Russell. A special recognition is also to be made to Bounti Killer for his contribution to music. Bounti has been a part of Sumfest since 1993, the first year of the festival.

Friday, International Night features R&B star Chris Brown, Jah Cure, Queen Ifrica, Etana, Tony Rebel, Gyptian and others.

Saturday, International Night II, features the lover Usher, Shaggy, Beenie Man, Tarrus Riley, Gramps Morgan, Christopher Martin and Bonafide, a Jamaican group of five brothers based in Las Vegas, California.

While music is the focus of Reggae Sumfest, the organisers of the international reggae festival offers patrons much more in the Second City of Montego Bay.
