WASHINGTON DC:

Ambassador Audrey Marks lauded the membership of the Washington D.C.-based members of the St Andrew Alumni Association during a fund-raiser held at her Chevy Chase residence on Saturday, July 10.

In her remarks, at the first event to be hosted there since she took office as Jamaica's chief envoy to the United States, she lauded the alumni's various outreach projects for its alma mater and commended them on over 20 years of existence.

President of the association Hillary Reckord Kirk, who works with a research and evaluation firm, has been actively involved with the group for over eight years. She told Outlook there were some 75 members in the association that has a presidential tenure of two years. She noted that this is the second year they have held the fund-raiser at the ambassador's residence.

The proceeds have been earmarked for the Katherine Reckord Education Fund that assists needy students at the alma mater. "We aim to have a quality affair because there are not many opportunities for West Indians to get together. By so doing, we assist the students of the school in many areas including books, transportation and Penn Relays," Reckord Kirk said.

And travelling all the way from New York for the party was Denise March, president of the Big Apple chapter. Come Saturday November 6, that chapter will hold its 50th anniversary gala at Antun's in Queen's. It starts with cocktails and ends with dancing. "We hope to raise funds to purchase software for the school's gallery and archives that will be opened in April 2011" she said. For more information contact: sahsnewyork@gmail.com

March, who is an auditor for a hedge fund company, said the alumni is reaching out to the wider community to support them. Other activities planned for the year include a golf tournament on September 15. Some 200 friends and family of St Andrew High School 'old girls' had a fine time dancing by the pool, and enjoying the food and copious amounts of liquor.
