SPANISH TOWN, St Catherine:

THE VISION Learning and Remedial Centre, which was on the brink of closure last year because of unpaid rent, has been given a new lease on life after receiving assistance from RBTT Bank yesterday.

The money was presented to Myrtle Aire, principal of the institution, after reading about the plight of the centre in The Gleaner.

Children who are unable to cope in the public-school system are sent to the institution for remedial classes. They are then sent back to the public-school system when they improve. The school charges $5,000 per term but Aire said many parents do not pay.

It was a tearful occasion for Aire as she accepted the cheque totalling $171,000. The institution was faced with a lawsuit because of the outstanding rent.

Aire broke down in tears and hugged the RBTT representative, as she repeatedly expressed her gratitude.

"This is a very momentous occasion for us. We have gone through a great deal of struggle and needed help. Therefore, we are grateful to RBTT for their act of kindness. We can pay some bills, '' a smiling Aire said.

Patricia Bignall, manager at RBTT's Spanish Town branch, made the donation on behalf of the financial institution.

She told The Gleaner that the article forced the bank into action, and after visiting the school it was then decided that help was really needed.

"This is really meaningful to the lives of the children who are rescued by the operator of the school. Therefore, it is a pleasure for us to give to education. Spanish Town is a tough community, so positive action like helping institutions like Vision Learning can only work well for the future,'' Bignall said.
