Ban them!
LEGISLATION IS coming to ban the use of cellphones while driving.
Prime Minister Bruce Golding said the time has come for the Government to draft statute to deal with the useof cellphones while manoeuvring a vehicle.
He was contributing to a debate on a private member's motion dealing with issues of road safety moved by Central Kingston Member of Parliament Ronald Thwaites.
Golding said a recent analysis of road accidents showed an increasing number of back-end collisions.
"The evidence did not go far enough to find out what was the reason, but I have a suspicion that (it's) cellphone usage," the prime minister said.
With modern phones, Golding said drivers were not only texting but browsing the Internet and watching movies while driving. "You cannot do that and drive," he cautioned.
The prime minister urged drivers to "pull over" if it becomes urgent for them to use their phones.
"In terms of the usage of the road and the focus that you ought to be giving to managing your vehicle, we are going to have to look at legislation to curtail the use of the phone," he said.
