Stop hypocrisy
THE EDITOR, Sir:
It never fails to amaze me the height of hypocrisy constantly displayed within the Roman Catholic Church, with which I am affiliated, with respect to homosexuality. What moral compass does Peter Espeut, in his column on April 8, have as his norm when homosexuality is rampant throughout Catholicism? He rattles on with the old, tired myths of young people "... self-actualised, developing a consciousness of themselves and their sexual identity". When are people going to understand and accept that nobody chooses this life of misery, persecution, alienation, and heartache? What is, or would be, so attractive about homosexuality to somehow make it so alluring to these "young people"?
Then to sensationalise his article, he talks about "people who make out with animals"? How many have Mr Espeut met? There will always be lunatics among us, but surely the courts can interpret the law. What is even more amusing is that we all know that there have been homosexuals in Jamaica occupying some very prominent posts and doing an excellent job. We even honour them after their passing, and it is acceptable to go 'wink-wink', 'nudge-nudge', provided it is not openly discussed that these good, brilliant people are homosexuals.
I am, etc.,
