Reckless taxi operators on Red Hills Road

Published:Friday | May 20, 2011 | 12:00 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I am appealing to the authorities to do something about the reckless driving by taxi operators along the Red Hills Road corridor, particularly in front of Calabar High School and Calabar Mews.

On the morning of May 19, I experienced a near miss when two speeding taxicabs, one barrelling down the wrong side of the road, almost collided with my vehicle as I exited Calabar Mews, with two young children aboard.

Only Heaven knows why we haven't heard of fatal accidents at that spot, but God forbid a student is injured, or worse, in that vicinity, I am sure there will be no shortage of politicians and police top brass expressing their disgust with the situation and declaring zero tolerance on lawless cabbies.

This sort of behaviour by public transport operators plying the Chancery Street to Half-Way Tree route has been going on for years. At times, police personnel patrol the route, but clearly not enough, or the penalties for driving recklessly and operating outside Transport Authority regulations are not harsh enough to discourage the behaviour. We should not have to die before action is taken!

Surely, it cannot be beyond the abilities of the police force to maintain order on the roads, particularly in school districts. This is basic policing, and the least that the citizenry should expect.

I am, etc.,
