Campion, Jago in high demand
Campion College and St Jago High School were the top preferred schools for students who sat the Grade Six Achievement Test (GSAT) this year, the education ministry has revealed.
In making the announcement yesterday, Minister of Education Andrew Holness also said yesterday thta the demand for spaces at some schools has far surpassed the number of spaces available, despite some institutions receiving no applicants.
Holness was speaking during a GSAT press conference at the ministry's head office in Kingston.
The minister said eight students picked Campion for each space available.
He added that, in terms of demand versus the number of spaces at the school, the institution is ranked number one.
Campion College has 210 places, and some 1,635 students picked the school as their first choice.
St Jago was ranked second, followed by Glenmuir and Montego Bay High.
Of the 167 high schools, only 50 were considered schools of choice.
Holness, however, did not give a statistical breakdown for all the schools.
"Every year at GSAT time, (there is) weeping and wailing as students can't get into the school of choice. For one school, for every place that is there, seven persons applied for it and at another school, after putting up 400 spaces, it was zero applications for that space. This minister will not allow that to continue," he argued.
