Digicel chairman and founder, Denis O'Brien, has been awarded Haiti's highest honour by new president Michel Martelly.

The National Order of Honour and Merit recognises O'Brien's investment in Haiti over the last five years and his contributions and promotion of the country, particularly in the period following the January 2010 earthquake that decimated the capital Port-au-Prince.

His efforts included the restoration of Haitian landmark and historic treasure, the Iron Market, a personal project with his wife.

Haiti has grown to become Digicel's largest market by subscriber volume of all 32 countries in which the cellco operates.

A release from Digicel said O'Brien was honoured in Port-au-Prince last week.
