Students from the Independence City community in Portmore and surrounding areas are in for a treat today. Telecommunications company Digicel has partnered with Councillor Keith Blake of the Independence Park division to host his annual Back-to-School Treat and Fair.

The event, which is coming right on the heels of another back-to-school treat that the company hosted in Westchester a week ago, will be held at the Independence City Park, Agusta Drive, starting at noon.

Senior sponsorships and activations manager at Digicel, Shelly-Ann Curran, said "This is the second such treat with which Digicel has partnered with the Portmore Municipality in August - a prime time when parents are making back-to-school preparations for their children, and we are always happy to assist in ensuring that students have the right tools to help them learn and grow."

Activities planned

The activities planned for the treat will again include lots of giveaways for the children in the form of school vouchers, exercise books and school bags, among other school supplies and giveaways both parents and the children will appreciate greatly. To top off the day, Digicel will also be providing refreshments and fun games, activities and entertainment for the children and their parents.

Curran further confirmed that this event in Portmore is an extension of the company's existing community initiatives that have been executed over the years. "In fact, we have enjoyed several partnerships with the Portmore Municipality, such as Christmas treats in the different communities throughout Portmore, the refurbishing of schools and the building of community centres and multi-purpose courts by the Digicel Foundation," said Curran.

She added that this Sunday Digicel will also be supporting the community of Portsmouth with their Back-to-School Treat, which will be held at 681 Milton Place at 10 a.m.

Councillor Blake said: "We are happy to once again have the support of Digicel, as we did in Christmas. Digicel partnered with us for our Christmas mini tree lighting and treat, and it was the most successful of our treats, and we expect this Back-to-School Treat to be even bigger and better."

Friday's treat will feature D'Angel, the top six Digicel Rising Stars contestants, Magnum Kings and Queens' Specialist and Digicel's dancers, while Digicel Ambassador Tifa and 2010 Digicel Rising Stars winner, Dalton Harris, will provide entertainment on Sunday at Portsmouth.
