  • LIME, NHT win in BH 20/20 cricket


The Business House Twenty20 cricket competition moved into its second round last Sunday with former champions LIME and league champions National Housing Trust (NHT) scoring impressive wins to advance.

AT CHALMERS AVE: LIME defeated Red Stripe by 102 runs. Batting first, LIME raced to 190 for seven off their 20 overs - Ryan Francis 58, former Jamaica and West Indies Under-19 player Andre McCarthy 38, and national senior player Horace Miller 25; Conejo Tappin 2-32. Red Stripe 88 for seven - Richard Allen 39, Garfield Rattray 15, Fitzroy Peterkin and Dave Johnson taking two wickets each.

AT CHALMERS AVENUE (second match): Sagicor defeated Digicel by 28 runs. Sagicor 169 for four from 20 overs - Kemar Marshall 81, Dwayne Ewart 37. Digicel 131 all out from 18.3 overs - Jowayne Robinson 43, Gavin Wallace 38; Paul Harrison 4-20, Ralston Nelson 2-19.

AT NATIONAL WATER COMMISSION (NWC) GROUND, MONA: League champions NHT beat defending KO champions Jamalco by six wickets. Jamalco, in a poor batting display from their formidable lineup, could only muster 61 all out - Dwayne Bennett 16, against Shawnlee Earle 4-19. NHT 65 for four - Erron Downer 41.

AT NWC GROUND (second match): NWC defeated former champions Jamaica Broilers by five runs. NWC 141 for five off 20 overs - Chris Senior 63, Mean Dowe 32; Andre Henry 2-20. Jamaica Broilers 136 for eight off their 20 overs - Larry Chiriton 66, Fabian Lakeman 21; Garwain Johnson 4-39, Oneil Wright 2-21.

The Business House competition takes a break for the 50th Independence holiday weekend and the Test match between West Indies and New Zealand at Sabina Park. It will resume on the following Sunday, August 12, with five matches in the Reggae Jammin league.

  • Ten in a row for The Gleaner in BH basketball

The Gleaner's high-riding team extended their unbeaten run to 10 in the Business House three-on-three basketball competition (division two) on Monday, with a close 26-24 victory over FLOW at the Stadium Courts.

As is customary, Keneil Allen with 13 points and captain Omar Wolfe with nine dominated the scoring, even though Wolfe, the competition's MVP last season, missed the entire first half due to unavoidable circumstances. Karyl Davidson scored 10 points for FLOW.

In other Division II matches played on Monday, Wray & Nephew, who have only lost to The Gleaner so far, defeated Courts 33-25 with Nigel Reid knocking down 17 for the winners and Jermaine Spaulding 10 for Courts.

Bank of Jamaica (BoJ) defeated Jamaica Infrastructure Operations (JIO) 28-16 with Christopher Scott leading the way with eight points. JIO missed star player Kemar McLeish, who was suspended by the Business House Basketball Association for this match.

In Division I action on Monday, Grace Cannings defeated last year's Division II champions, National Land Agency (NLA) 38-30, with Kevin Daley getting a game-high 17 points for the winners and Howard Edwards 13 for NLA. Unbeaten leaders JTA Credit Union clipped Seprod 31-29, thanks to a game-high 16 points from National Basketball League's Urban Knights player Dave Blackwood. Kevin Palmer scored 12 for the losers.

And former champions MegaMart defeated Digicel 37-24, with Damion Richards getting 15 for the winners and Brian Blair 13 for Digicel.

  • Eagles beat Waltham in Wray & Nephew skittles

Defending champions Eagles rebounded from their only loss of the season - to Rowe's Strikers on the previous Sunday - with a 6-3 victory over Waltham Strikers in the Wray & Nephew White Overproof skittles competition last Sunday at Hughenden Plaza.

In other Premier League matches, Eastern All-Stars also defeated Mister C 6-3, while Starliner stopped Rowe's Strikers 6-3 as well.

In Major League action last Sunday, co-leaders The Dip beat Mystix Strikers 6-4 at The Dip in Gregory Park, Mister C 'B' clipped Dragon 6-5 after Dragon led 5-0 and ran out of players, while joint leaders Olympic Strikers stopped Ladies Strikers 6-4. The competition takes a break this weekend to mark Jamaica's 50th Independence anniversary.

  • Petrojam vs Scotia in BH football clash

Unbeaten defending champions Petrojam will take on another unbeaten team, the Scotiabank Group, today in a KSAFA/Western Sports Division I Business House football top-of-the-table match at Tinson Pen, starting at 4 p.m.

It will be the final preliminary round fixture for both teams, which have already qualified for the semi-finals.

Petrojam have won seven of their eight matches - drawing the other against NHT - to lead the standings with 22 points, two ahead of Scotiabank (20), who have won six and drawn two.

The UWI, having completed their preliminary round fixture, have finished a clear third with 16 points from nine matches, but the last qualifying spot is difficult to call with Carib Cement (nine points), The Gleaner, NWC and Wisynco (all on eight points) in with a chance of squeezing through.

The Gleaner will oppose Norman Manley International Airport (NMIA) in a home match at Winchester Park, St Georges College, today, in their final round fixture.

Meanwhile, Petrojam drubbed NMIA 3-0 at Tinson Pen on Monday with goals from Dennis Neish, Cornelius Simms and captain Aphas Bernard.

Scotiabank, meanwhile, defeated their 'jinx' team, NWC, for the first time in 19 years in this competition, following a 3-1 win last Saturday at the NWC playing field, Mona.

Scotia were led by a brace in the first half from Anthony Greenwood, while Jamoy Sibbles made it 3-0 in the 50th minute. David Laylor got a consolation goal for NWC 10 minutes later.

Carib Cement and NHT played to a goalless draw on Tuesday at Alpha ground, while in Division II action, Jamaica Urban Transit Company and Bank of Jamaica drew 2-2 at the Edward Seaga Sports Complex.

  • St Catherine win Confed double

St Catherine won the Juici-Patties South Central Confed double after landing the Under-15 title to add to the Under 13 league they had dominated.

St Catherine edged Manchester for the Under-15 title with a 16-0 win over a weakened St Elizabeth line-up at Spanish Town Prison Oval earlier this week. They finished on 15 points, two more than Manchester who had to settle for a 2-2 draw with Clarendon at Brooks Park. Both Manchester and St Catherine had entered the final round on 12 points.

St Catherine dominated the Under-13 competition from start, amassing 16 points from six games, winning five times and drawing once. Despite losing 0-1 to St Catherine, St Elizabeth grabbed second in the Under-13 league.

The final results ensure St Catherine and St Elizabeth will represent the South Central Confed in Under-13 action in the upcoming Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) National Confed play-offs. Manchester join St Catherine as Confed representatives in the Under-15 segment.

  • St Jago win Alphanso Davis Cup

Manning Cup representatives St Jago High are the inaugural winners of the Alphanso Davis Cup, a pre-season schoolboy football weekend tournament organised by coach of 2008 finalists Spaldings Courtney Jackson.

The tournament was hosted at Brooks Park and included three other teams in hosts Spalding High, Vere Technical and Calabar High. St Jago, who are now coached by Portmore United's assistant coach, Jeffrey Hewitt, who formerly coached at Garvey Maceo Comprehensive, finished the tournament unbeaten with three wins.

In the opening games, Spalding tagged Calabar 2-0, while St Jago had a 1-0 win over Vere. On day two, Spalding were 2-1 winners over Vere, while St Jago pipped Calabar 1-0.

On the final day of the tournament on Monday, Vere and Calabar drew 1-1, while St Jago edged Spalding 1-0. Play continues today with a double-header at Brooks Park.

In the individual awards, Vere's Mercardo Knight copped the leading goalscorer prize with two goals, Andre Morrison of Spalding was adjudged Best Defender, Romaine Williamson of Spalding won Best Midfielder and Romaine Hamilton, St Jago's goalkeeper, winning the big prize of Most Valuable Player.

  • Settlement, Connection lead Porus Youth League

Defending champions Settlement, Connection and St John's Basco Boys are the early leaders of Manchester's longest running Summer Youth tournament - the Western Union-sponsored Porus Youth league.

The tournament kicked off at the Porus Community Centre last weekend featuring 13 teams in a dress parade, as well as two games.

Connection started with a bang, tagging newcomers Village Strikers 3-0, while Settlement began their defence with a 1-0 win over another newcomer, Fogo Road of Clarendon.

Later in the week, Connection produced another win, hammering Broadleaf 6-0 to be the early leaders in Zone B with six points. Settlement matched them on points in Zone A following a 4-1 victory over Russia.

St John's Basco Boys also had two wins, outscoring former champions Studds 4-3 and then defeating Village Strikers 2-0.

The competition continues tomorrow at Porus Community Centre with a triple-header.

Games on: Genus vs Studds at 2 p.m.; Fogo Rd vs Chillzone at 3:30 p.m.; and Tuff Gong vs Russia at 5 p.m.

  • JFL quarter-final hunt

The hunt for the final four slots of the eight-team cast for the knock-out phase of the Jamalco Football League will be the feature of this weekend's schedule.

The four teams already confirmed are New Bowens and Juventus ( Zone C), Napoli (Zone B) and Top Hill (Zone A). Two of the spots will be given to the best third-placed teams across the three zones.

The most difficult challenge appears to be in Zone A where three teams - Top Halse Hall, Invincible and Savannah are locked on seven points.

Mineral Heights are in contention for one of the available spots as they have nine points and hold a two-point lead on Wembley and Sunset in Zone B. Napoli have already qualified.

Matches today at Wembley: Bottom Halse Hall vs Juventus at 2 p.m.; and Invincible vs Savannah at 4 p.m.

Tomorrow: Napoli vs Wembley at 2 p.m.; and Top Halse Hall vs Top Hill at 4 p.m.

  • Peter Bunting League

A new season of the revamped Peter Bunting central Manchester constituency football competition kicked off last weekend at the Blue Mountain Community Centre.

The summer league has departed from its usual format where it was confined to the Mandeville division with organisational strings pulled from Georges Valley. Now the emphasis will be constituency wide. The revamped format now sees a whopping 28 teams competing.

Additionally, competition is no longer confined to football, with Twenty20 cricket and netball also involved.

In football, Mandeville United began with a 1-0 win over Waltham while in the feature game, hosts Blue Mountain whipped neighbours Top Bellefield 5-0.

The next set of games will be played tomorrow: Mandeville Police vs Hanbury; Bombay vs Porus; New Visision vs Albion; Three Chains vs Grey Ground; and Comfort vs New Hall.

  • Domino champs Passagefort give early indication

Defending champs Passagefort United gave domino fans and clubs an early indication that they will be hard to beat this year as they prevailed 200-198 in an exciting countdown over an All Stars team, as the The Colin Fagan South East St Catherine domino League was officially launched at the Garveymeade Sports Club last Sunday.

Nine teams will participate in the league that lasts for over two months.The first set of games will be played on Sunday, August 12. Apart from good sportmanship and unity, the competition's main sponsor, Colin Fagan, the Member of Parliament (MP), for South East St Catherine, said the league is also used as a medium to meet and talk to people from his constituency.

  • Rivoli on verge

Win and go through will be firmly on the lips of Rivoli United's players as they play their final preliminary round match this afternoon against Beacon Hill.

A win will not only put them through to the quarter-finals against defending champs Old Harbour Bay United next Saturday at the Spanish Town Prison Oval, but it will provide some relief to fans because their team has faced a torrid season so far. Rivoli lost six points in the boardroom and clawed their way back in contention with a decisive 3-0 win over Spanish Town Police last Thursday. It was the latter's only loss of the season.

Rivoli (nine points) will have to get past Beacon Hill in a 4 p.m. clash at Monk Street and will advance ahead of De La Vega City (nine points), which play New Raiders at 4 p.m. at Dela Vega City playing field, no matter the result. De La Vega have a better goal difference than Rivoli, but head-to-head stats is used to break teams locked on points. Rivoli defeated De La Vega 2-1 earlier in the season.

The other quarter-finalists have been confirmed as Spanish Town topped Zone C and will play Bodles next Saturday, while the other quarter-final pairings pit Royal Lakes vs Eltham, and Walks Road vs Albion. All matches will be played at the Spanish Town Prison Oval.

  • Waterford community League kicks off

Cool Runnings iced defending champs Park Way 3-2 as the Fenley Douglas-sponsored Waterford Community Corner Football League kicked off at the Waterford field last Sunday. Ramone Atkins struck a double and Adrian Campbell scored the other goal for Cool Runnings, while Anthony Curry and Andre Mignot netted for Park Way.

The competition continues tomorrow with two games. Newcomers, Mash Way take on Wigton at 2 p.m., while at 4 p.m. Little America challenge Harmons, who are semi-finalists from last year.

Twelve teams are down to compete this year. Cool Runnings won the uniform parade and collected $5000 from Councillor Douglas, who is councillor for the Waterford Division.
