Bermuda to launch telecoms regulatory authority

The Bermuda government says it will launch this week a new regulatory authority to oversee the islands telecommunications industry.

The authority is part of the new One Bermuda Alliance (OBA) governments plan to liberalise the industry, bringing down the current licencing regime that restricts the services that telecoms firms can offer.

Economic Development Minister Dr Grant Gibbons said opening Bermudas telecommunications sector to greater competition under a modern regulatory framework is of vital importance to consumers, businesses and the growth of our economy.

He added that the reforms that are underway are designed to bring new products and innovative services at competitive prices to Bermuda. We believe it will also result in new investments and job creation.

The three-member commission will hold its first meeting today.
