34 honoured at Cornwall Regional Hospital

Thirty-four employees of the Cornwall Regional Hospital (CRH) in Montego Bay were rewarded for their dedicated service to the institution.

During the function, 21 main awards, 10 departmental awards, and three distinguished service awards were handed out.

The ceremony, which was the first of its kind at the CRH since it was established in 1962, was put on by a team of hospital interns as a show of gratitude and recognition for the hard work done by the recipients during 2012-2013, which affected the delivery of services at the hospital in a positive way.

Dr Derek Harvey of the Department of Anaesthesia took home the coveted Doctor of the Year Award along with another award for distinguished service to the hospital. Dr Jeffery East, head of the Department of General Surgery, and Dr Delroy Fray, CRH senior medical officer, were the other recipients of distinguished- service awards.

The other top awardees were Kerrian Easy, Most Dedicated Nurse; Dr Kyaw Minn of the Department of Internal Medicine, Most Dedicated Doctor; and Dr Abigail Creighton of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Most Punctual Doctor.

In her keynote address at the function, attorney-at-law Jeanne Robinson Foster lauded the interns' efforts to recognise their peers at the hospital, stating that it was always important to recognise and show appreciation of those who had done well.

SAYING THANKS

"In our society, we always have a lot to complain about, but today, we are seeing a difference," said Foster. "These interns are saying to you, 'We have been watching you … . We appreciate what you are doing, and we want to say thank you'.

"I am hoping that this particular awards ceremony will cause the entire CRH staff to explore ways in which they can do better," added Foster. "Whenever you have a place as large as this - so many departments, so many different groups - there is usually a divide-and-rule policy. But what I hear the interns saying through these award is 'Don't stick with divide- and-rule, stick with unite and prosper'."

Anthony Smykle, acting CEO of the hospital, also praised the interns' initiative in planning and launching the awards function.

"This event, planned by the medical interns, is to be lauded," said Smykle. "This is good for the institution and the medical profession and is an indication that we are in good hands going forward."
