Digicel hires O'Brien's company to oversee cell sites

Digicel Jamaica has partnered with UK-based Sierra, which will provide engineering and cell-site maintenance services for the local operations.

Sierra is also owned by Digicel founder and chairman Denis O'Brien. The company is a provider of installation and back office services to utility companies in Britain and Ireland.

"Sierra has developed a distinguished track record of service to a variety of utility companies, and that is the kind of excellence that Digicel stands for. We are truly pleased to have the technical support of Sierra as we forge a new path for service delivery and technical capacity in our operations," said chief technical officer at Digicel Jamaica, Krishna Phillipps, in a media release announcing the arrangement.

"We believe that our expertise, coupled with a consistent pursuit towards offering innovative solutions will ensure an efficient contract delivery and successful partnership," said chief operating officer of Sierra, Peter McCarthy.

Digicel Group serves 13 million customers in 31 markets. Jamaica is its home base.
