The Office of the Services Commission has confirmed a Gleaner report that retired Deputy Commissioner of Police Jevene Bent has been appointed commissioner of corrections.

The appointment takes effect from June 24.

Bent told The Gleaner minutes after the formal announcement was made that she would be concentrating this week on handing-over proceedings before she takes the chair on July 1.

Bent, Jamaica's and the region's first female deputy police commissioner, will take over from Lieutenant Colonel Sean Prendergast who demits office at the end of this month when he goes on pre-retirement leave from the Jamaica Defence Force.

Prendergast was seconded from the Jamaica Defence Force to the Department of Correctional Services in March 2010.
