LETTER OF THE DAY - Stand against child labour
THE EDITOR, Sir:
As a frequent shopper in downtown Kingston, it is heart wrenching to see the numerous cases of child labour each day. It is appalling to witness children walking around filthily clad, looking like they are bearing the burden of the world, asking, "Miss, yuh waan peppa?" That was just one example of the items they sell. These children are left to be preyed upon by the monsters in our society.
I commend the police for chasing illegal vendors off the streets. However, they should put some of that effort into protecting these children. I understand that the parents may need extra income, but the child should not be providing that income for the family.
A child should be at home playing innocently or going to school getting educated and socialising with other children. A child should not be selling in the streets. Where is the love for our children?
These parents are robbing their children of their childhood and action needs to be taken to punish these unworthy parents.
