Workplace wellness doesn't have to mean on-site gyms and in-house personal trainers.

Trafalgar Travel Limited has been encouraging healthy living among its staff, without spending a lot of money and time putting together a plan.

The payoff has been big and, according to Nadene Morgan-McKay, employees show up to work more often, are more productive and visit the doctor less frequently.

"The programme is for them, not something you are doing to them to reduce your insurance costs. But having the right attitude and getting everyone involved, in a positive way, is a good first step," Morgan-McKay said.

The programme included in-house presentations on how persons can lead a healthier lifestyle through diet and nutritional changes.

Following on its success, Trafalgar Travel will be hosting a Mini Health Fair/Blood Drive on World Health Day, Monday, April 7, at 12 Garelli Avenue (near to NCB Atrium) from 9 to 3 p.m. The activities will continue throughout the week with in-house presentations for staff.

Morgan-McKay said they have received an overwhelming response to the event. Some of the services that will be available to the public will include blood-pressure checks, eye testing, skin analysis, blood-glucose tests, body mass index (BMI), foot detox, bio-age reading and health status, to name a few.

"Some of the services will be for free, while the prices of others will range between $60 to $1,500. There will also be vendors showcasing health and wellness products," Morgan-McKay said.

Other companies invited to participate include National Commercial Bank, Petroleum Corporation of Jamaica, Petrojam and Jamaica Money Market Brokers. Sagicor, Immunogizer, Linstead Market, CariMed, Lions Club, the National Blood Transfusion Unit, Proactive Lifestyle, Kirk Distributors, Express Fitness and the National Health Fund will also be participating.

Morgan-McKay is also encouraging persons to come and give blood, as the life it is used to save might be their own.

"The National Blood Transfusion Unit (Blood Bank) is constantly in need of blood and once you donate blood, an account is created with your name on it. The recipient could be you or a family member," she said.
