The style journey of Camesha:From POSHE to LAPOSHE
Garfene Grandision, Assistant Lifestyle Coordinator
For those of us who are in the fashion know, the name 'Poshe' might ring a bell. Thirty-year-old Camesha Powell is the face behind the fashion label that has evolved from rising fashion designer to world traveller and stylist. The label has now evolved into LAPOSHE as the designer continues to move with the times. A fashion designer at heart, Powell told Flair in a recent interview that, "I'm at the point now where both (fashion designing and styling) are so integrated and co-exist that I absolutely find it hard to choose." However, she later admitted that fashion designing is her first love because it is more organic and allows complete self-expression of her creative vision in its entirety.
As it relates to her fashion pursuits, the designer tells us that it has been very challenging, but considers herself fortunate. "The fashion industry, though exciting, is very challenging, but I have been fortunate and am very proud of my accomplishments. I moved to NYC to pursue a master's in Global Fashion Management to really get to know this industry from both the business and creative aspects. I successfully completed that and am now working on launching my business and brand here."
She continued, "Overall, my pursuits have been very positive. I've come a long way from a girl with just dreams, but in my eyes, I have really just begun because there is so much more to come!"
NEW COLLECTION
Currently, Powell is working on a new Spring/Summer collection, as well as introducing accessories to her line, starting off with a multipurpose pouch. She also has a few shows coming up in June for the Caribbean American Golf Masters event in New York and a fashion event in St. Maarten. At the same time, she is working as the fashion editor for Triple The Focus magazine. When we recently caught up with Campbell in NYC, she had just wrapped up an editorial photoshoot, that she styled in Times Square. According to her, she was inspired to do the photoshoot based on her fascination with the Big Apple. "What inspires me the most about NYC is that there is no ordinary or set rules in fashion. The idea of being overdressed does not exist and I have always lived by this mantra with my personal style. The story behind this editorial, shot in Times Square in the middle of the day, is about two glamorous girlfriends living by their rules and conquering the city in style," she shared with Flair.
Styling for Powell wasn't a decision that she consciously made. "I love fashion. I enjoy the art of styling and people react to what you naturally project, so I had persons who admired my personal style and approached me to work for projects. Most of my professional styling career has been from opportunities presented to me and I work by the philosophy 'Say yes and figure it out'."
As for the future, Powell says the sky is the limit, as the young designer is very driven with high hopes for her LAPOSHE label to grow globally. She can be contacted via her Twitter, Facebook or Instagram sites: @laposhestar.
