Excellent language and literacy programme at The Mico University College

THE EDITOR, Sir:

The Bachelor of Education pro-gramme offered in language and literacy at The Mico University College is excellent.

It provides prospective teachers with the requisite theoretical knowledge and skills to be effective and reflective practioners.

The programme has sufficient scope and a practical sequence that adequately prepare student teachers to function efficiently in local and international classroom settings.

All teachers in training are mandated to participate in varied teaching episodes during their study. These practicum assignments allow them to apply the knowledge and skills gathered in the classroom while developing the mettle of a successful instructor.

Additionally, student teachers are tasked with identifying problems in the classroom (during their practicum experience) and, under the guidance of experienced educators, are facilitated in developing reformative programmes.

The lecturers who spearhead the academic programme are exceptional. They offer adequate scaffolding to students, yet providing ample opportunities for self-directed learning and self-management. They also exemplify the art of effective teaching, thus inspiring those under their tutelage to strive for professional excellence.

extensive research

The university's library is also well equipped with materials to facilitate extensive research in the area of study. Furthermore, lecturers are always willing to share texts that can enable students' understanding of various concepts.

Since completing the foregoing degree with first-class honours, I can personally attest to my prodigious growth as an educator.

The last eight months as a teacher of English and literature at prominent high school has been a personal test of my development. I find that I am not only able to prepare eclectic instructional plans to meet the diverse needs of my students, but I am also able to execute these plans so aptly that many of my students, even the most uninterested and hyperactive ones, have been enrapt.

Moreover, I have been able to design various traditional and alternative methods of assessment to measure the students' gradual growth. Many of these, along with detailed instructional plans on a myriad of topics, have been adopted as models for the English Department.

In light of my experience at The Mico University College and my professional tenure, I would recommend this undergraduate programme to persons who are passionate about teaching and are determined to positively transform the education landscape locally and internationally. The knowledge and skills to be gained are invaluable and must be used to kindle a bright academic, social and moral lantern that will illuminate the darkest abyss of ignorance.
