Gleaner Grew Me: Henry Rose of St Ann's By
Carl Gilchrist, Gleaner Writer
ST ANN'S BAY, St Ann:
HENRY ROSE was recently spotted inside the St Ann Parish Library reading The Gleaner, as he sought to catch up on news that he might have missed.
He wasn't quite sure when he first started reading The Gleaner, but he had a marker to go by.
"I used to read Gleaner from it was at Harbour Street, long before even your time," he told the reporter.
The Gleaner Company moved from Harbour Street in Kingston to its current location on North Street in 1969.
Growing up as a child in St Ann, The Gleaner was the main source of sporting news for Rose, an avid sports fan.
"As you can see, I'm reading sports right at the moment," he said.
Outside of sports, he would generally read the main news items such as those on the front page and the couple pages following. And the comics.
"Yes, man! I read the comic strip. Even now I still read it. I read like the Phantom and Rex Morgan."
Over the decades, this had been his reading pattern.
Rose grew up in a family accustomed to reading the newspaper and this has not changed. The only thing that might have changed is that he regularly reads the Gleaner available at the parish library, instead of buying a personal copy.
But as a regular reader over the years, Rose is satisfied with The Gleaner as a news source.
"Right now, I don't really have any complaints about The Gleaner. Everything alright," he said.
Asked about his favourite day for the paper, he responded: "Is like … every day. Because I always want to know what's going on. So I try to read it every day."
