Let's face it, not everyone loves prints and bright colours. While some persons will come alive with prints and colours, others prefer the safety of black and the reliability of pairing black with white - and why not?

These two shades are the ultimate dynamic duo of fashion - the yin and yang, the good and bad, the hard and soft. However, sometimes the downside of going classic is that it can look outdated and seem almost boring. The start of summer is the perfect time to show you how to upgrade a monochromatic palette with modern updates.

NEON SAYS SUMMER

First of all, nothing says summer like neon, they are everywhere - nails, jewellery and shoes. It seems the best way to update your wardrobe this summer is to invest in something neon.

But like everything in fashion, restraint is the key. If you are going neon, tone it down with familiar colours such as navy, grey, black or white, and give the eye somewhere to rest so it will not be overbearing.

Stripped dress: Shown here - pink neon pumps add a striking contrast to a black and white striped pencil dress with leather shoulder detail.

Campbell's skirt: Shown here - a midi skirt featuring an all-over Campbell's Soup print in a lightweight knit fabric is contrasted with a neon tank top, tied with a front knot, and pink neon strapped platform pumps.
