EWI licence to be revoked on July 21
The Energy ministry is reporting that the licence granted to Energy World International (EWI) to build a power plant in Jamaica is to be revoked effective July 21.
In a statement yesterday, the ministry said EWI had been notified of the revocation.
The Government decided to revoke EWI's licence after it failed to meet a deadline to post a US$37 million performance bond.
The project ran aground last month after EWI encountered problems getting the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) to provide funding for the 381-megawatt plant it proposed to build.
The IDB had cited a report from the Office of the Contractor General that outlined procure-ment breaches, which, it said, should have excluded EWI from the bidding process.
The control of the project has since been moved to the Office of the Prime Minister, with a six-member Electricity Sector Enterprise Team, chaired by Dr Vin Lawrence, appointed to lead the restarted process.
