Russians get 60-day extension on visa waiver
A 300 per cent increase in visitor arrival from Russia has led to the Government granting an extension for the visa waiver regime for Russians.
Last March, the Jamaican government waived visa requirements for nationals of Russia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and Ukraine visiting the island for tourism and cultural exchange for periods of 30 days or less.
"Ongoing monitoring of the current visa waiver regime has revealed that it is meeting the objective of the tourism interests with a 300 per cent increase in visitor arrivals from Russia, with no adverse security implications to date," a ministry paper on matters discussed at Cabinet revealed.
Extension to 90 days
The ministry paper, while being silent on an evaluation carried out for the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and Ukraine, said Cabinet has agreed to extend the waiver for Russians from a maximum of 30 days to a maximum of 90 days per year.
The regime has also been altered to allow nationals of Russia to obtain visa waivers if they intend to travel to Jamaica for business purposes such as meetings and other activities that do not include paid work or employment.
