Woman with a passion for animals
I have known Karlene Craig for more than 26 years, and her sudden death on Sunday, January 18, brings to a close a long and amazing lifetime career of loving, training, caring for and healing dogs, cats, horses, goats, monkeys, birds, and many other exotic animals, including reptiles, that often would have otherwise perished with little hope.
Karlene has worked with animals both on her own, in her own time and place, and also while employed at the Hope Zoo, Guardsman and Serenity Park, and the Jamaica Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals over many years. She is well known and loved among animal and pet owners and trainers throughout Jamaica, and was always generous with her valuable time and advice, ready and willing to help guide owners towards better knowing their pets and caring for them. She had a wonderful, dry sense of humour, sometimes in the most intense and trying circumstances, and would bring forth a grateful smile or even a laugh in the midst of grief and loss.
Karlene cared. She cared for the friends from all walks of life that she made so effortlessly. She worked calmly and carefully in sometimes extremely arduous situations involving people and their animals.
Karlene Craig loved people, and she loved animals equally, with an honest, deep and abundant love.
She will be dearly and forever held in our hearts, and we will remember and think of her when we are around the innocent and trusting animals that may find themselves in our hands and depend on us for their welfare.
Thank you, Karlene, from all of us, and all the creatures, great and small - especially your precious little dog, Miss Ginger, which you loved so very much.
