New JUTC fare collection system coming

The Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) is to introduce a new fare collection system next year.



The company now uses the Smart Card, which is a cashless fare collection tool.



However, the JUTC’s Communications Manager, Reginald Allen, says that system has proven inefficient in terms of its cohesiveness with other technological systems.



He says the technology behind the Smart card is also becoming obsolete.



Allen says the new collection system will make the Smart Cards or bus tickets as accessible as telephone cards.



Allen says the new bus fare collection system will be introduced on a phased basis, and should be fully rolled out by the end of the summer holidays next year.
