Motor vehicle policy changes coming

Justice Minister Senator Mark Golding, has indicated that the Administration is reviewing the Motor Vehicle Import Policy with the aim of enhancing equity and balance in the sector.



According to Senator Golding, the Government is aware that because of the absence of clear guidelines to govern the importation of vehicles, there are a number of potential risks.



However, he said one imperative of the Government is to see to the importation of more environmentally-friendly vehicles.



Senator Golding also said the review seeks to strengthen gaps in the importation ban on half cars.



At the same time, he said the administration is considering ways to make the importation of repair parts more accessible.



Senator Golding said the warranty requirements are to be strengthened for both used and new car dealers, as part of efforts to improve customer service within the sector.



He also said there are plans to facilitate legitimate registered companies who wish to import vehicles for their own use.



According to Senator Golding, under the provision, each company is allowed to import a maximum of three units over a two-year period, with the option of obtaining additional units through registered dealers.
