A woman and her nine-year-old son were shot and killed by unknown assailants at their home in Newtown, Westmoreland, this morning.

The police say another 12-year-old child was also shot and injured during the incident and is now hospitalised while the woman's common-law husband escaped injuries.

The police have identified the victims as 34-year-old Kereisha Ricketts and nine-year-old Jafe Francis.

According to the police, Ricketts and her common-law husband were at home with their children when they noticed fire coming from a chicken coop outside.

It is reported that the couple went outside to put out the blaze when Ricketts was shot.

The police say her common-law husband went to get help and on his return, he discovered that Jafe and another of his sons were also shot and injured.

The Constabulary Communications Network say detectives from the Westmoreland Police Division have commenced a top-level investigation to determine the circumstances which led to the killings.
