A section of the May Pen Market was this morning gutted by fire leaving a large number of shops and stalls in a pile of rubble.

The cause of the fire is still unknown.

Assistant Superintendent of the May Pen Fire Department, Orette Barnswell, says they got a call shortly after 2 o'clock this morning that some shops in the market were on fire.

The Spanish Town Fire Department had to be called in for assistance.

Preliminary reports say about 47 shops have been burnt.

The damage is estimated to be in excess of $30 million.

Vendors and shop owners in the market say they are puzzled as to what may have caused the fire.
