High-power Jamaica team to World Relays named, Blake, Fraser-Pryce among 39

KINGSTON, Jamaica:
As expected, Usain Bolt will not travel to The Bahamas as part of Jamaica’s team to the IAAF World Relays, but with the likes of Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, Yohan Blake and Warren Weir among their ranks, there is certainly enough fire-power in the team.
Bolt, the double world record holder in the 100m and 200m is only just returning from injury and is not expected to compete until later this season.
The Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) met last night to ratify the 39 member team that will compete at the May 24 and 25 meet, set for the Thomas A Robinson Stadium in Nassau, with a number of high-profile athletes expected to light up the event.
Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, who is coming off a triple gold medal – winning performance at last year’s IAAF World Championships in Moscow, leads the team with Blake, the 100m world champion from 2011 and the London 2012 double silver medallist making his full comeback after injuring his hamstring last season.
Warren Weir is also in the team, so is fellow standout sprinters Nesta Carter, Michael Frater and the fastest Jamaican in the 100m this year, Andrew Fisher.
Nickel Ashmeade, Kemar Bailey-Cole, Rasheed Dwyer, Edino Steele, Julian Forte and Oshane Bailey are also among 17 male athletes named, with one more to be added.
Novelene Williams–Mills, Kerron Stewart, Schillonie Calvert, Carrie Russell, Natoya Goule, Anneisha McClaughlin, Stephenie McPherson and Kaliese Spencer are among a high-power 22–member female contingent.
Jamaica should be fielding teams in the men’s and women’s 4x100m, 4x200m and 4x400m as well a female 4x800m unit.
The IAAF World Relays will also see the contesting of the 4x1500m relays.
