Five juveniles convicted of murder or manslaughter last year - Correctional Services

Figures from the Department of Correctional Services indicate that five juveniles were convicted last year of either murder or manslaughter.



According to the department in 2013, a 17-year-old girl was sentenced for murder, while four teenage boys were sent to correctional facilities after being found guilty of manslaughter.



No juvenile had been convicted of murder in a year earlier.



The data shows that 98 children were sentenced to juvenile facilities last year.

This was a 52 per cent decrease over 2012 when 192 children were sentenced to spend time in correctional centres.



According to the data, six children were found guilty of robbery last year, down from 12 in 2012.



Juveniles found guilty of wounding occasioning bodily harm fell from 17 in 2012 to 11 last year, while the number of children classified as uncontrollable fell from 54 in 2012 to nine in 2013.
