LIME cuts smartphone prices ahead of tax removal

Published:Monday | May 26, 2014 | 6:17 PM

Telecommunications company LIME has started to reduce the price of its smartphones ahead of the impending removal of custom duties on some handsets.

The 20 per cent Common External Tariff (CET) now payable on imported smartphones is to be removed as of July 1.

In a statement this afternoon, LIME said it welcomes the decision of the Government to remove the CET on imported smartphones adding that the move will help more Jamaicans to own a web-enabled mobile device.

LIME also says as a pre-emptive move it has cut the cost of its latest smartphone, which was introduced to the market today.

According to the company, the phone was imported at just over $10,000 including the CET.

But, LIME says it will be absorbing a portion of the cost and the phone will be sold for $6,995 dollars plus GCT.
