MP Shahine Robinson pleas for help for Jet Ski operators

Member of Parliament for North East St Ann, Shahine Robinson, is appealing for the tourism minister to intervene to help Jet Ski operators in St Ann secure the required insurance to resume their business.

Speaking in the sectoral debate in parliament yesterday, Robinson said while the operators have been told they are now free to continue commercial operation, they are finding it hard to do so.

She says this is because of the requirement for US$2,000 per year insurance coverage.

Robinson says the cost is extremely prohibitive as insurance companies are reluctant to allow the operators to make the payment in installments.

Tourism Minister, Dr Wykeham McNeill gave commercial Jet Ski operators at the UDC beach in Ocho Rios, St Ann, the go ahead to resume operating on June 1.

However, he said the ban on Jet Skis introduced earlier this year would remain in place for all other areas.

The ban had been instituted following three accidents involving personal water craft.
