The Jamaica Constabulary Force is to spend $88 million to upgrade its Automated Palm and Fingerprint Identification System.

The national security minister Senator Dwight Nelson this morning signed a multimillion-dollar a contract from the upgrade Sagem SA of France,

The upgrade is to be undertaken over a six-month period.

The fingerprint system was introduced in October 2006.

Senator Nelson says there were a number of benefits to be accrued from the improvement of the system.

According to him it will greatly improve the capabilities of the Jamaica Constabulary Force to use fingerprint identification technology in solving crimes in Jamaica.

He further said the system would build on the successes in service delivery to the Jamaican people in areas such as providing police records

Assistant Commissioner of Police, Les Green, says currently almost 300,000 fingerprints are on the system.

He says more than 400 cases are linked to some of these fingerprints.
