New Jamaica Teachers' Association president Nicely defends union members

Published:Tuesday | August 20, 2013 | 9:52 AM

Dr Mark Nicely has begun his tenure as president of the Jamaica Teachers' Association (JTA) with a call for the government not to use education as what he described as a cheap political football.

He has also stoutly declared teachers cannot make any additional sacrifice.

Delivering his inaugural speech shortly after being invested as president, in a ceremony at Sunset Jamaica Grand last night, Dr Nicely was firm in his defence of his union’s members.

He said education must no longer be used as a source of cheap sensationalism.

Dr Nicely continued that education was not a prize to be won through public debate between the JTA and the Ministry of Education as education was far too important to be trivialised.

The JTA president further declared that the belief of some people that teachers were reluctant to make sacrifices was far from truthful.

He insisted the country owes teachers a debt of gratitude for their contribution to nation building.
