Energy minister abandons efforts to meet with contractor general
Energy Minister Phillip Paulwell has abandoned plans to meet with Contractor-General Dirk Harrison regarding his stance on the contract awarded to Energy World International (EWI) to build the new 381-megawatt energy facility.
The news comes as Harrison declared on the weekend that he would not back down from his stance that the Hong Kong-based EWI should have been disqualified from the bidding process. He says to retract his position would be unethical and dishonest.
During a meeting of the People's National Party's (PNP) National Executive Council this afternoon at the University of the West Indies, Paulwell told members that he would no longer be seeking audience with the contractor general.
PNP Deputy Chairman Anthony Hylton says the energy minister gave a full presentation on the project to the NEC and clarified members' concerns. He says the minister has received the full support of the NEC.
Paulwell is expected to address the issues fully in his presentation during the Sectoral Debate in Parliament on Tuesday.
