Landslide at landfill in the capital of Guinea kills 30 people, officials say

CONAKRY, Guinea (AP) — A mountainous heap of refuse collapsed at the largest landfill in Guinea’s capital of Conakry early on Sunday, killing 30 people, according to the central government. Authorities said that heavy rains, which started at around 2:00 a.m., washed over the refuse at Dar Es Salam — the largest landfill in Conakry — and triggered a landslide that buried nearby shacks. A search and rescue operation was underway to find survivors. Six people were seriously injured, and several homes were destroyed.

Indonesian police arrest 72 people suspected of starting forest fires

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — Indonesian police on Sunday arrested 72 people suspected of starting some of the recent forest and peatland fires as huge blazes in central and western parts of the country triggered a harmful cloud known as a choking haze. Indonesia has been battling fires driven by an intensifying El Niño pattern and a prolonged dry season, generating dense smoke that crossed into Malaysia, according to Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency, or BNPB.

Young Reggae Boyz suffer 4-0 loss to Haiti at CFU Under-14 final

Jamaica’s Under-14 Reggae Boyz were defeated 4-0 by Haiti in the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Under-14 Challenge Series final in the Dominican Republic today. Jamaica, who were the defending champions, had been flawless throughout the competition. They opened with a 4-0 victory over St Kitts and Nevis, edged Aruba 1-0, then defeated Curaçao 2-0 to top their group with the maximum nine points. In the semi-finals, the young Reggae Boyz defeated Bermuda 1-0 to secure their place in today’s decider.

The campaign draws on the contrast between Bolt’s reputation as the world’s fastest man and Jardiance’s message about slowing the progression of kidney disease. WESTERN BUREAU: At the age of four, Tegan Vincent-Cooke was placed on a horse as a form of physiotherapy. Twenty-one years later, the young Jamaican woman living with cerebral palsy and dystonia rode onto one of equestrian sport’s biggest stages with three letters beside her name: JAM. For Vincent-Cooke, Jamaica’s first para dressage rider to compete at the FEI World Championships, getting to Aachen, Germany, was about far more than scores and placings. “For the first time, I rode onto this world stage with JAM beside my name,” the 25-year-old said.
