The 2012-2013 academic year begins in earnest tomorrow after the round of orientation sessions at various levels of the education system over the past week. Here, there, and everywhere, scams proliferate. Some are legal and some criminal. I was reading a United States-based business newspaper which points out that many brokerages use Ponzi schemes to pay their clients, meantime hoping for a change in markets which will alleviate their positions.

Caribbean policymakers are truly delusional if they expect multinational corporations and Asian countries to be responsible for the region's development. China has provided the government of Grenada with a 353-unit housing scheme, for the country's inhabitants. Further, the government of Taiwan donated $900,000 to the construction of a cybernetic in the Dominican Republic.

I want to comment on the swirling debate about Usain Bolt's status as a legend. When I looked in the Oxford Pocket Dictionary, I found that a legend is anyone who has achieved a remarkable feat. And I, therefore, cannot find any problem with Bolt being styled as a legend. Period!

The increased discussion and acceptance, here and abroad, of the so-called 'same-sex marriage' calls for a face-to-face discussion of the issue. To begin with, the term 'same-sex marriage' is a misnomer; it is a fraud, it is a farce, it is an aberration of human nature, it is a perversion.

You are the salt of the earth, but when the salt has lost its savour, how can it be salted again? So said Jesus Christ to his disciples. I say to the teachers of Jamaica at the beginning of the 2012-2013 school year that you are the salt of the education system, and the savour needs improvement.

WE FAIL as a country in acknowledging the tremendous leadership deficit that has put us in the very unfortunate state of affairs with which we have to grapple with today. With the change of government eight months ago, last year's improving economic indicators last year have gone haywire.

Cho! My lighter just won't summon up the spark that could end the hullabaloo by burning every single national flag. I had planned to hire the round-the-clock truckers who stole the Trelawny beach to help me tear down the Jamaican flag from every pole and car antenna and start a bonfire that would make the London Olympic flame look like a candle.

Mariamne Samad named herself after a woman who was stoned to death. As a child, she'd read a book of Bible stories which told the tale of Mariamne, the second wife of King Herod. As she remembers it, Herod's son by his first wife, Doris, accused his stepmother of adultery. Confronted by Herod, Mariamne fearlessly stood her ground, proclaiming her innocence. She was put to death all the same.
