Inception to showcase societal perceptions
Inception – Power, Disruption and Evolution art exhibition is slated to begin on July 9, at mid-day. The participating artists include Shasha Porter, Ammoy Smith, Cerena Parkinson, Jeff Menzies, Tishana Fisher, Shediene Fletcher, Monique Gilpin, Mikheal Deans and Malcolm Lindsay.
Inception is a group exhibition that signifies the artists’ perceptions and experiences of society. According to the organisers the objective is to emphasise through personal experiences, the influences of religion, socio-economic, political factors and evolution regarding the search for one’s own identity.
“These factors affect our way of life in the Caribbean and diaspora. One of the major historical disruptions is religion. Power is relational and comes from all segments of society. The particular identity of the Caribbean lies in its history of colonial exploitation and the corresponding evolution of a multi-racial creole society divided by ethnicity, colour and class. Individuals have also discovered that the search for one’s own identity requires an examination of the institution which has helped to shape that identity,” said the artists’ in a communiqué.
The show will be held at CreativSpace, located at Mark Lane and Laws Street, downtown Kingston.
