Excitement versus enthusiasm
Enthusiasm is a robust quality. When we are open, cheerful, and eager, we naturally get things done. This kind of energy can move mountains. But not always ‘getting things done’ brings deep happiness. Sometimes, we stay busy with things we enjoy — this makes us feel good for a while, but something still remains missing.
Enthusiasm runs deeper. It is connected to our inner purpose — what we are to do to feel fully alive and satisfied. It can include building meaningful relationships, having sincere conversations, and focusing on living with peace, love, joy, etc. Enthusiasm flows from the core of our being. It is a way of expressing the divine fulfilment within us. On the contrary, excitement to achieve or having achieved something is fleeting.
PATIENCE ACCOMPANIES ENTHUSIASM
When we are not connected to this deeper level, certain signs appear. We may start comparing ourselves with others, feeling either better or less than them. Even though we may be achieving a lot, a sense of competition or judgement may sneak in. Like using a hammer for every problem, excitement — when mistaken for enthusiasm — can become damaging.
This can also affect others. When people see us getting things done, they may feel jealous or step back. This could be a sign that we are holding on to our ego even if we don’t realise it. This is the time to check whether our enthusiasm has a companion, i. e., patience!
Patience gives space. It allows others to share their views and gives us the strength to wait for the right space. Sometimes, enthusiasm in intention plants a seed, and we must trust that it will bloom when the moment is right. Patience helps us to be optimistic and know the goodness and genuineness of the idea.
FROM ACHIEVEMENT TO ATTAINMENT
The word enthusiasm comes from the Greek word entheos, meaning “inspired by God” or “filled with divine power.” This shows us the real secret. Enthusiasm is most powerful when it is selfless. Whether we offer time, ideas, presence, or skills, if we do it with a pure heart, it carries a special strength.
There is a difference between achieving and attaining. Achieving means reaching goals while attaining means growing from within. When our actions are driven by compassion and pure intention, the result is lasting and meaningful. When we establish the union of our energy with the Divine power, everything becomes possible as we become the instrument for the divine energy to flow through us. Selfishness vanishes.
Enthusiasm inspires, uplifts, and spreads like a gentle wave, bringing light to many hearts. Never confuse the two as the gap between them is wide. Be enthusiastic and keep spreading the everlasting energy.
