Poem

Jamaica

I became independent in 1962,

A day I will never forget.

It certainly was a dream come true,

As I grew from strength to strength.

Surrounded by my lush, green hills,

Meandering rivers and streams.

Life was oh so simple then,

Now there is so much more to be seen.

My people were strong,

My people sought peace,

in a world full of wrongs.

But with the saying, ‘’No problem’’,

We sang our old Folk Songs,

‘’Wi likkle but wi tallawah’’,

Someone said, referring to our size.

That was always outdone by our talented youth,

Who always took home the prize.

Yohan Blake, Shelly-Ann Fraser and Asafa Powell too,

Are some of our athletes in Track and Field,

They’ve certainly paid their dues.

We fly our flag so high with pride,

Black, Green and gold;

Which speaks of resilience, beauty and sunshine,

Embedded in our souls.
