Redefining ‘health’
As a part of the World Mental Health Day, many organisations held talks and activities to raise awareness about the importance of mental well-being. Yet, amid all these efforts, it’s worth pausing to ask – what is health?
Surprisingly, most of us define health only in relation to disease. Our definition says someone is healthy when they are “not sick”. But, is health just the absence of illness?
Health is a complete state of harmony between body, mind, and spirit. Each aspect of well-being – physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual – is deeply interconnected. Just as we take care of our bodies by eating right, sleeping enough, and exercising, we must also nurture our minds and emotions. In the present era, ‘mental health’ is being recognised as an essential part, but one key layer beneath it – emotional health – is still taken lightly. Emotional health forms the base on which mental health stands, and ignoring it weakens the entire structure of our well-being.
BOOSTING EMOTIONAL IMMUNITY
Think of emotional health as the body’s immunity. When our physical immunity is low, we easily catch infections. Similarly, when emotional immunity is weak, we repeatedly “catch” negative emotions such as anger, fear, jealousy, or sadness. The solution is not to fight every emotional virus in the world but to strengthen our own inner system.
To boost this emotional immunity, spiritual health plays a vital role. When the spirit – the real self – is strong, stable, and aware, emotions remain balanced and the mind stays calm. Without that inner awareness, we become reactive and restless, easily disturbed by situations or people. Just as no medicine can replace a healthy immune system, no amount of external comfort or entertainment can replace the stability that comes from inner peace.
THE ROOT OF WELL-BEING
Spiritual health is the root from which every form of health grows. It begins with self-awareness – knowing who I truly am beyond my body, profession, or relationships. When I see myself as a peaceful, divine being, I naturally see my body and mind as the precious, wonderful tools to experience life and treat them with love and respect. I start living with purpose and calmness, flowing through life’s ups and downs with grace.
Just as a tree flourishes when its roots are watered, life blossoms when the root – spiritual awareness – is nurtured. Self-care then becomes sacred, not selfish. It starts with caring for the being within and radiates outward to every part of life.
Health is freedom. Anything truly healthy feels light, peaceful, and free. Pause for a moment – do you feel light within? If not, it’s time to strengthen your roots and embark on a journey toward true health from the core. Health is the wealth that brings happiness.
