The landscape of the Jamaican SUV market shifted this week as Mitsubishi Motors, under the stewardship of Stewart’s Automotive Group, officially introduced the all-new Destinator. Unveiled on February 25 at The Jamaica Pegasus hotel, the 1.5L turbo-powered vehicle enters the arena under the ambitious theme, “Where to Next?”
The launch signifies a new model arrival and represents a strategic move to capture the growing segment of drivers demanding a seamless transition between the urban sprawl of Kingston and the rugged life of island-wide travel.
A Fusion of Performance and Premium Comfort
At the heart of the Destinator is a 1.5L turbocharged engine, designed to provide the necessary punch for Jamaican terrain while maintaining efficiency. However, the mechanical specs are only half the story. Mitsubishi has pivoted towards a “tech-forward” cabin experience, featuring:
Connectivity: A 12.3-inch infotainment hub compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Atmosphere: Multicolour ambient lighting and a panoramic sunroof to enhance the cabin’s sense of space.
Utility: Features tailored for family and long-distance travel such as an integrated cooler, foldable rear tables, and three-zone air-conditioning.
Audio: A premium Yamaha sound system curated for high-fidelity acoustics on the move.
The exterior maintains a bold stance, grounded by 18-inch alloy wheels and modern daytime running lights, ensuring that the vehicle looks as capable as its Drive Mode Selector suggests it is.
Prioritising Safety in the Local Context
Beyond the aesthetics, the Destinator arrives with a heavy emphasis on Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS). During the launch, Franz Lawrence, Brand Sales Manager for Mitsubishi Jamaica, addressed the sobering reality of local road-safety statistics.
“While no technology can replace responsible driving, advanced driver-assistance systems can play a meaningful role in reducing risk,” Lawrence noted. The Destinator’s safety suite includes:
Forward Collision Mitigation and Adaptive Cruise Control.
Blind Spot Warning and Lane Keep Assist.
360-degree camera systems and Rear Cross Traffic Alert to navigate tight parking and high-traffic scenarios.
Strengthening the Stewart’s Portfolio
The introduction of the Destinator is a milestone for Stewart’s Automotive Group, the authorized distributor for Mitsubishi in Jamaica. Managing Director Duncan Stewart emphasised that the model reflects the group’s commitment to delivering globally engineered products backed by local expertise.
The launch event was bolstered by a collaborative ecosystem of partners, including Allied Insurance Brokers, Scotiabank, Stewart Finance, and Rubis, signaling a comprehensive support structure for new owners.
The Mitsubishi Destinator is now available for viewing and test drives at the Mitsubishi Motors Jamaica showroom located at 51 South Camp Road, Kingston.
